As you can see the first block of the chain has a hash value and it’s previous values is not defined hence this genesis block of the chain.
Every times a new block is created or the existing block is altered a new hash for that block is created hence creating a new identity for it and the hash of the present block becomes the previous hash of the new block hence making a chain of blocks.
